I honestly believe that the editing/retouching in digital photography is what ‘developing’ a film is in analogue photography.

With analogue, you had the opportunity to choose the film (different colour casts), how to process or if cross-processing was suitable, burning, dodging, etc. Editing a digital image is the photographer’s opportunity to give the image his or her personal style. Without ANY editing, it’s like grabbing an analogue film and handing it over to the client. In my personal opinion I don’t think that’s the complete artistic package – but that’s me.

This is true, Egan; however a photog should include a clause in their contract of photography to avoid this. I state in my contract that the client is not to modify the image, edit it, colourise/de-colourise it or crop it in any way. I remind them of this (just in case they didn’t read the contract through, which they should do) when I hand over the CD with images, in a little digital thank you note & reminder that they should use the pictures as they are.

I would never ever sell an unedited image. Much like you, the editing process is part of my overall creative process. The unedited original is just not a true representation of the work I like to do.
